Walter Martin was concerned that if the Bible spoke of both tongues and knowledge in one verse, that if tongues were done away with in the church, then there would be no knowledge in the church either, and that would be unthinkable.
The Bible does say in 1Co 13:8 that knowledge shall vanish away.
8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. KJV
Now consider this. When shall knowledge pass away, and what will be the state of things when there is no "knowledge"? You see it is not "knowledge" (as we understand it) that passes away, put the "gift of knowledge", a knowledge that is not learned by study or received by hearing or seeing. When the gift of knowledge passed away, there was still knowledge that had been learned (whether by studying the Bible or otherwise) present in the church. The "gift of knowledge" (as well as tongues, prophecy, and miracles) is no longer needed when we have what knowledge we need written in our Bibles. These sign gifts were credentials that those that had them were truly sharing God's message. We don't need them today, for the Bible is God's Word/message.
